Phillip Griffin Audiologist

AudiologistPhillip Griffin Audiologist

Phillip Griffin takes his hearing seriously. As an audiologist at the Hearing Clinic in Greensboro, he seeks to “help people who have hearing problems, imbalance, dizziness, or problems with ringing of the ears,” Griffin says.

He specializes in audiological treatment, which involves no surgery and no medication. He notes that the two biggest causes of hearing loss are aging and noise induced and people must learn to retain their hearing abilities.

Griffin’s varying interests also allow him to better serve his clients. As a musical aficionado, he is able to help musicians deal with specific issues regarding concepts that may be unfamiliar to non-musicians. “Whenever a musician comes in, they usually pair me up with them,”

Griffin says with a laugh. To complete his trifecta of service, Griffin also teaches Tai Chi at the Greensboro Cultural Center. One of his aims is to reduce falling in the elderly. “It’s a community based intervention for balance,” he adds.

“I really like the community service [and] health aspect of it all.” For more information regarding The Hearing Clinic, call 336.852.4095 or visit The Hearing Clinic. For a schedule of Griffin’s Tai Chi class, visit meetup.com and search for “Tai Chi.”

The Hearing Evaluation: The First Step Toward Better Hearing

Hearing Evaluation

When a hearing loss is first noticed, it can be a bit disconcerting: Why can’t I hear like I used to? Am I going deaf? Do I have a tumor? Will I have to wear hearing aids? What do I do next? Everyone feels some sort of disappointment and possibly even a feeling of loss when they realize that a hearing loss is affecting their ability to communicate the way they’d like to. You’re not alone! Research says that nearly 28 million Americans have hearing loss. New technology advancements are making great strides in the realm of hearing amplification. Hearing aids are smaller, more adjustable and better in background noise than ever before. And, hearing aids are improving the lives of people just like you every day.

So, what’s my first step?

Once you realize that you’re not hearing like you used to, a diagnostic hearing evaluation by an Audiologist is the best first step toward better hearing.

With this evaluation, your Audiologist can determine what type of hearing loss you have, the severity of the hearing loss and the possible solutions.

Several tests are necessary to determine the extent of the hearing loss and its effects on communication.

All of the necessary tests will be conducted during a one hour appointment and you will leave the office with a greater understanding of how the hearing system works, how your hearing compares to someone with normal hearing and how and why your hearing loss affects your ability to communicate.

If the hearing loss is medically correctable, you will then be referred to a medical doctor who specializes in diseases of the ear.

If hearing aids are the best possible solution, your Audiologist will discuss the different options and the improvements you can expect with the advanced technology that is now available. It’s a good idea to bring your spouse or a friend or family member with you to this appointment.

If you suspect you have a hearing loss, call to make an appointment for a hearing evaluation today!

Hearing Impaired – Some Effective Treatments

For those people who are hearing impaired, there are a number of effective treatments available.  We’ll discuss some options in greater detail.

People who are hearing impaired suffer from some degree of hearing loss.  Depending on the type, it may be mild to profound.  This is a serious and important medical problem and a great deal of ongoing effort is made to develop and implement effective treatments.

The most common type of treatment for the hearing impaired includes the use of hearing aids.  As a matter of fact, 95% of the Americans who are hearing impaired, use hearing aids as their primary type of treatment.

It has been found that surgical or medical procedures can be used in only about 5% of the cases.  For people born with a severe type of hearing loss, a surgical procedure called cochlear implants may provide significant benefit.

Otherwise the use of hearing aids remains the most significant way to treat hearing loss effectively.  Patients are screened and tested to determine the degree of impairment. At that time, a hearing aid can be fitted to the patient which can help to correct these losses.

These hearing aids work well in many situations.  They can help people to better discern conversations in noisy environments.  And some devices have inductive loops which allows them to be used with telephone receivers.

Effective treatment for the hearing impaired has tremendous benefits.  These treatments have helped to reduce anger, anxiety, and frustration.  They also see marked improvements in happiness and peace of mind.

Hearing Problems – Some Common Types

Hearing ProblemsThere are many kinds of hearing problems which people may experience over their lifetimes. Some are temporary and others may be longer lasting or permanent. Here are some of the more common types of hearing problems and how they might be addressed.

For a baby or young child, a very common hearing problem is an ear infection. It is either viral or bacterial and affects the middle ear. The typical symptoms include earache, headache, fever, temporary mild deafness, difficulty in sleeping, and a loss of appetite.

This type of problem is commonly treated through the use of antibiotics. It usually goes away in a day or so given proper treatment.

Another hearing problem can be a burst eardrum. This may occur as a result of a head trauma such as a blow to the ear. Or it may be caused by a object inserted into the ear which can penetrate the eardrum.

This is a serious problem which requires immediate medical attention. The doctor or nurse will clean the ear very carefully, give you an antibiotic shot or ear drops, and then prescribe a ten day regimen of antibiotics.

If the problem is severe, you may need attention from a specialist in this area.

Tinnitus is another hearing problem which affects many people. It is characterized by a constant noise in the ear such as buzzing, humming, whistling, or hissing. It can be caused by long term exposure to loud noise. This is why many musicians suffer from this problem.

Or it may be caused by Meniere’s Disease, infections of the middle ear, inflammation of the inner ear, or Eustachian tube obstruction. In some cases this problem can be treated by unblocking the Eustachian tube or by following a regimen of antibiotics. However some types are permanent and many people find relief through relaxation techniques or white noise to help block the sounds.
